Zanzibar is an archipelago consisting of 51 small islets surrounding two main islands
Shortly after independence, Tanganyika and Zanzibar merged to form the nation of Tanzania in 1964. Never-the-less, Zanzibar continues to function as a partner state with a semi-autonomous status to the mainland.
The name Zanzibar is derived from a combination of two Arabic words, ‘Zenj’, meaning black, and ‘bar’, meaning land, resulting in the ancient title ‘Land of the Blacks’. As early as the 1400s, the area became known as a base for spice, ivory and slave traders voyaging between Arabia, India and Africa.

This is a guided historical tour to the old town of Zanzibar City, formerly known as Stone Town. The tour is covered mainly on foot providing the opportunity to experience the architectural and cultural sites of the beautiful old town. You will stroll through the narrow winding streets lined with stores selling local crafts, antiques, jewelry, clothes and spices. The tour stops at many historical sites, the bustling market, winding alleyways, ornately carved and studded Arab doors, two cathedrals and countless mosques.
No trip to Zanzibar is complete without a visit to one of Spice farms. Spice tours offer you the opportunity to indulge your senses with an array of smells, tastes and textures – from the zing of a chili to the refreshing taste of the green coconut flesh – this this tour will awaken your senses!
Take a traditional Dhow boat trip (handcrafted from African mahogany wood) to the nearby islands of Kwale and other beautiful islands and sandbanks in the Menai Bay conservation area, across stunning turquoise waters! There is a good chance that you will see humpback whales or bottlenose dolphins. You can stop at a sandbank, where sunshades can be set up, and you can explore the surrounding reefs by snorkeling. The reefs are teeming with tropical sea life. Or, you just relax and enjoy the solitude of being on a sandbank in the middle of the ocean…!
Jozani Forest, 45km southeast of Zanzibar, boasts a rich diversity of flora and fauna making it a most magical place. A huge variety of wildlife lives in and around the forest. Most notable among the wildlife viewing is the opportunity to observe troops of endemic Red Colobus monkeys – a very rare species and only found in Zanzibar. This delightful forest has a with a swamp in the middle and small streams flowing into the ocean.
“Prison Island” is the nickname for Changuu Island. It is a small island situated approximately 20 minutes by boat west of Zanzibar. It was formerly used by slave owners as a private detention for disobedient slaves. In 1892, it was bought by the first British Minster of Zanzibar who constructed a jail on it, thus giving the island its name. However, the prison was never put into use. In the early 1900s, the prison was converted into a hospital and used to quarantine sailors with yellow fever. It is now home to the critically endangered Aldabra Giant Tortoises (originally from the Seychelles Islands) and a walk around the island can bring you face to face with one of these giant creatures. Off the shores of Prison Island, people are able to enjoy swimming and snorkeling.
The favorite activity is relaxing and doing nothing! Enjoy the sunrise at the start of the day and the sunset at the end. Stargazing is excellent here away from city lights and pollution – the sky seems to come to life with stars and planets not normally viewed.
If relaxing is not enough for you, there are quite a few more options for you to enjoy around the Island; they are designed to get you as close as possible to natural treasures without disturbing them.
Kayaking (Note: the waters here are very calm); snorkeling; and deep sea fishing

ExcellentBased on 13 reviewsAidasas2024-03-26Perfect safari We were a group of 15 people visiting northern Tanzania, and we have booked two day safari to Tarangire and Ngorongoro with Dare 2 Travel. This was our best decision ! The service was WONDERFUL. Guides / drivers Martin, Simba and Levis were great, told us a lot, and most importantly - were taking safety as nr. 1. Everything exceeded our expectations. I suppose the fact that, at the end of the day, we were already leaving the park, but the driver took extra mile as has spotted a lion and we got one of the best photos, tells a lot. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. You must book through them.Vaidas S2024-03-26Great two day safari ! We are so glad we followed the recommendation and used Dare 2 Travel ! We have booked a two day safari which was magnificent. The drivers / guides Simba, Martin and Levis were FANTASTIC. They were professional and most important - very safe drivers. We have received a lot of info and enjoyed every minute of the tour. We also booked a trip to Mataruni waterfall, and the hike was a great one too. Highly recommend !Olga K2024-03-25They are the best Our two days safari, coffee tour and visit to Waterfall in Materuni with this company was perfect! Good organizing and communication overall, but there were 2 slightly stressful situations: hike staff (mandatory) tiping and hotel being unpaid in time. In the end, everything was ok though and we had a great time. Thank you.Jan Grashuis2022-07-28Climbing the Kili via the Northern Circuit We had a great experience in succeeding to climb the Kilimanjaro with this organization. Aanrader!Lena Oswald2022-02-28My adventurous climb of Mt. Kilimanjaro I woke up extremely joyful on the morning of 26th January 2022. I could only picture the adventures that were ahead of me for the next 8 days. The climb was awesome and enjoyable because the hospitality I received from the whole team, from day 1 was exceptional. These are people I got to meet for the first time but they turned out to be the best company which made my climb easy and very memorable. ???? Each one of them played their different roles in supporting me where the climb was tough, ensuring I eat and drink, cracked jocks and trust me, the laughter was one of the ingredients for my good health throughout. They also kept giving me hope and these words helped me a lot as I kept ascending to the top. The food was on point.???? Despite the changes in appetite due to high altitude, I still kept going as the food was suitable for the place. The consultants were also involved despite being on the ground. They kept checking on me through the team to ensure I am in good health and fit to proceed. Thanks Dar 2 Travel Consultants and team, we managed to summit Africa’s highest point on the morning of 01st February 2022 and it was wow. I recommend Dare 2 Travel Consultants because the services they give are just what one needs to accomplish such a lifetime adventure. ????l.almog2019-10-21Excellent safari professional people served us with a big smile all the time . the safari was well organized and they were very attentive to all of our needs .the drivers were very kind and they had a lot of knowledge about everything .
